Schantz, born in Darmstadt, Germany in 1817. Schantz, immigrated to the United States in 1828 & eventually settled in Lawrence Township, Stark County, Ohio sometime in the 1840's. According to census records in 1850, he operated a gun s hop with two employees & produced around 100 rifles a year. He disappears from census records in 1860 and was not documented again until the 1880 Census in Barry County, Michigan, where it appears he gave up gun making & switched to farming like many other small-scale gunsmiths of the period. Schantz died in 1909.

Condition - Fair to Good: Bore is frosty & shows heavy pitting to rifling. Finish shows mottled darkened patina overall with some corrosion around touch hole.
